I think that when it comes to religion you have the right to be left the fuck alone to do what you want within a margin of sanity (no cult killings for instance). I think that religious rights is fundamental to maintain the health of a nation, specially one as diverse as the US.

However, I think there’s a difference between religious freedoms and religious legislation. We have a lot of the latter here in Mexico and it is, if anything, fundamentally damaging to society.

I’m atheist personally, but I know a lot of great people that have found guidance and solace in their faiths. The church is a piece of shit but the basic morals of many religions are good teachings for many.

I think these people just think that being religious makes them good, even if deep down they’re heartless.

Based on what I’ve heard from evangelicals who I know who support him, I figure there’s 2 main reasons for their unflinching support.

1) they believe America is destined to become a Christian nation. Their endgame is theocracy, and they think god hand picked Donald Trump to get us there.

Reason 2) they’re selfish hypocrites and he keeps promising to turn America into some white Protestant manufacturing wonderland that they’ve all convinced themselves we used to be, despite our economy having always been heavily service based and our culture for the most part always being a melting pot of all different cultures. Just because they complain the loudest, doesn’t mean that America belongs to white Protestants.
